The Glen Avenue Footbridge symbolizes an investment in sustainability, in plantings and in materials.
Originally built in 1915, Lake Bluff's historic steel and wooden footbridge crossing Ravine Park at Glen Avenue recently underwent a much-needed restoration. To address signs of deterioration and celebrate the connection between people and nature, Teska collaborated with the Village and consulting engineers to redesign the bridge approaches and restore the surrounding landscape.
"The bridge not only symbolizes a connection of two sides of a ravine, but also connects individuals to the natural world."
Nestled amidst a canopy of oaks and maples, the reconstructed footbridge features meandering pathways, wood benches, outcropping boulders, native trees, plantings, and site furnishings constructed of locally sourced materials. Ensuring a cohesive aesthetic that aligned with Lake Bluff's established character was front and center. Landscape materials were specified and installed to complement the Village's existing furnishings and planting palette, and promote their mission of sustainability.
More than just a means of crossing the ravine, the reconstructed bridge now serves as a vital connection between residents and the natural world. The project's thoughtful design, from the bridge approaches to the surrounding landscape, fosters a sense of community and encourages residents to pause and enjoy the beauty of the ravine.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new footbridge in October 2024 brought together community members to celebrate the reconstruction made possible by a $400,000 anonymous gift.
Project highlights include:
- Naturalized pathways constructed of decomposed granite and mixed size boulders.
- Site furnishings constructed of locally sourced wood materials.
- Native, locally sourced plantings.
