Kankakee is rethinking how people will connect with one another and with community destinations by building out portions of a planned bike network. The downtown is a key component of this network as bikers, walkers and drivers now have a more attractive downtown streetscape to shop, dine and gather.
The streetscape plan was developed after a series of public outreach activities and events, including coordination with a stakeholder committee, community survey, public events and meetings during planning and construction. Features of the built streetscape include the conversion of one lane of on-street parking to on-street bike lanes, reconstructed sidewalks, custom seating, gateway piers inspired by historical photographs and decorative lighting.
