King Bruwaert House (KBH) is a full spectrum and highly regarded senior living facility that has been serving the Burr Ridge community for almost 90 years. As part of recent enhancements to KBH facility, Teska, along with our partner, SAS Architects, was hired to design a new and improved outdoor living experience. The new additions will integrate with the existing facility to bring care and activity for future generations.
KBH residents will benefit from a wide variety of outdoor experience gardens ranging from formal activity courtyards to contemplative, passive, and therapeutic gardens that complement the desire for a new independent living and healthcare community. Our design goal is to provide a wide range of daily and seasonal outdoor living choices. Residents can choose to go for formal tea and cake in the center commons garden where there are multiple sitting areas and a large stone water feature or they could enjoy a lemonade while they cheer on a game of Bocce Ball or practice their golf putting skills. Gardens abound to provide socializing, entertainment, passive and active recreation. Garden level courtyards are comfortable for individuals on a quiet walk or convertible for special gatherings, parties, celebrations, and holiday events.
The new design features a set of cascading staircases that provide a transition from the classic KBH Georgian garden architecture to a progressively more casual woodland perennial garden that will serve to complement an existing large oak grove. A lush shaded garden courtyard provides a private retreat to read and have quiet conversation.
The new healthcare center addition welcomes residents to the KBH community and features a covered entry arrival court, robust foundation shade garden plantings, and views to the neighboring park. A memory care porch and wandering garden provide opportunities for planting and small outdoor gatherings.
The KBH plans are approved as a planned unit development by the Village Board and plans for construction to start fall of 2020.
